On Sunday, December 28, Troy and I took his mom for a little canoeing and fishing on the West Coast. We put in at Chokoloskee Island and headed for the Lopez River Campsite on the Wilderness Waterway. Eventhough the focus of this trip was canoeing, fishing, and later, eating stone crabs, we did look at birds. We found the usual suspects along the Tamiami Trail: herons, egrets, White Ibis, Woodstorks, Kingfishers, Red-tailed Hawk, Kestrals, Kildeer and Palm Warbler. We racked up about 45 species for the day. Highlights while paddling on the river were Osprey, Roseate Spoonbill and Short-tailed Hawk, light morph. We started out at and near home with Eastern Screech Owl, Cooper's Hawk and Mottled Duck.

The fish were jumpin' along the Lopez River. We caught and released Mangrove Snappers and one huge Catfish. Yikes! I didn't realize how slimey are catfish. The MAIN event took place at City Seafood in Everglades City where we dined on large Stone Crab Claws and fried grouper plates with all the fixin's. We washed everything down with Full Moon Winter Ale; that "abbey ale brewed with a hint of dark Belgian sugar."

On the way home on the Tamiami Trail, we passed the gigantic, humungus, Miccosukee Resort & Gaming sign. I saw the name "ROBERTO TORRES" flashing in red lights, who will be performing at the New Year's Eve Gala tonight along with "Hansel Y Raul". Hey, Toe, I didn't know you moonlighted as a lounge singer. And "Hansel Y Raul"? Is that you, Rock?

Today, we will launch the "Sea Sparrow" from Black Point Marina and head up to Key Biscayne to watch all the fireworks. Let's see what sea birds I can find today and tomorrow.

Happy New Year
Drive Fast, Bird Like Crazy
(well, maybe not tonight)
