Laura, thanks for this! Painted Buntings have come to my yard for about 12 years and this year the numbers are lower. So far only 4 females and 2 males. Yes, capture for the pet trade industry is a huge problem, esp. south of the U.S. A couple years ago FWS busted some Mexicans who had trapped them at plant nurseries in south Dade and sold them at the Miami flea market. They retrieved over 200 Painted Buntings and they were released at Flamingo Gardens.
