That sounds like your Cooper's Hawk. The tail often gives it off. Not a chance of a sharp-shinned hawk, so I will say Cooper's Hawk. The tail length tells it was not a buteo. If it was not a positive identification, try some more, but I would think Cooper's. So far, I have heard reports of 9 Cooper's nesting in South Florida, so they are obviously now around breeding in South Florida.
