Angel and Mariel stopped at my driveway this afternoon to look for the House Finch, since they didn't have this for the year. They got to see it, so if you mention House Finch to them, they will say their favorite phrase: "We already got that for the year." I wasn't home, but they had a pretty good outing. In addition to the House Finch, they had Indigo Bunting, Painted Bunting, Red-winged Blackbird, Prairie Warbler, Palm Warbler, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Grackles, Doves, Cardinals, Gnatcatchers, and of course, the horde of Nutmeg Manikins, which by now form a cloud so think it blocks out the sun.
In the skies above, they saw Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Shot-tailed Hawk, and Cooper's Hawk. Since when has all this stuff been around? I definitely need to spend more time yardbirding.
Yesterday, Angel and Mariel came by but they got here too late to see the House Finch. But, we did see another cool yardbird just to the east of my property: a Lesser Nighthawk. There is a lot of natural area a little east of me, so I need to pay more attention to what's around.
Whilee Angel and Mariel were wrapping things up in my driveway, I was driving home from donating blood plasma and talking to them on the phone when I saw a couple of interesting birds on a wire. They turned out to be 2 more House Finches. Maybe there is an expansion of this species, or some form of migration into southern areas. Thoughts??
