Just before leaving my house this morning I took a few minutes to observe my feeders and watched as a young Western Tanager flew in and perched on the wire in my yard. It was there for about a minute and flew off again. If I see it again I'll post so others can go see it. I was not expecting that. I was actually expecting a Laysan Albatross, but got the tanager instead.
A brief stop at the east side of Matheson produced fewer warblers than earlier in the week, but there were many thrushes feeding in the trees of the hammock area, easily observable from the small path between the hammocks just west of the stone shelter. There was one Gray-cheeked and about 10 or more Swainson's that I could see. Two Scarlet Tanagers were in the mix as well. I was hoping for a Summer Tanager to make it a Tanager Trifecta. Maybe this afternoon.
