While a rarity, this species is seen almost yearly in South Florida. On my first birding trip ever, a friend took me to Flynn's in the afternoon to look for Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and Western Kingbirds. We saw 2 Scissor-taileds, 15 Western Kingbirds, and an adult, male Westen Tanager. I guess I started off a bit spoiled in this birding thing, with Western Tanager on my first trip. The following trip we found a Stripe-headed Tanager (sorry, Western Spindalis). I thought birding was easy with those results.
