This afternoon we met up with Toe to do some birding at Matheson. There were good numbers of migrants around, at one point more birds than we could put our binocs on. The east side of the park was way more productive than the west side. Even though there was a wedding rehearsal going on at the stone pavilion, the violins seemed to keep the birds mellow. Toe had to leave so we decided to keep birding for a little while later. The only good birds that he missed were two Merlin that were terrorizing the lake area, and a Blackburnian high in the pines that we had checked with him earlier (sorry Toe). The light was almost gone and we did not get awesome looks at the bird but it did fit the description of a fall female. The wingbars and the yellow eyebrow were clinchers for us, the bird landed in the pines and then disappeared. Peregrines were making occasional passes looking for an easy meal, with no luck. All in all it was an awesome afternoon birding with lots of migrants around to look at, I know Toe was not disappointed.

Here is the list:

Short-tailed Hawk
Merlin
Peregrine Falcon
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Gray Kingbird
Red-eyed Vireo
Blue Jay
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher

Yellow-throated Warbler

Nature is Awesome
