Fern Forest Nature Center off Atlantic Boulevard and Lyons Road in Broward has an indigo on display in their visitor's center. I believe the lovely animal s name is Blue Velvet.

The last indigo I saw was in 1967, near the present Metro Zoo. I was working as a carpenter roofing a house, when a laborer, James, who had heard I caught snakes, began yelling to me there was a snake crossing the road. I jumped off the roof and ran up to the snake, which was a magnificent indigo about six feet. I picked it up and it didn t struggle in the least. I was admiring my prize when the beating began. I took multiple blows to the back of the head by what turned out to be a rolled newspaper. The affront was accompanied by loud, shrieking demands to unhand the reptile. As I turned, I was staring at a very angry woman dressed in a house robe and curlers.

The entire construction crew was now watching the scene unfold in jaw dropped disbelief. The woman began tugging at the snake which I gave up solely for the poor serpent s sake. She then informed me that it was her children s beloved pet, an escapee that very morning from its cage. Her kids had been inconsolable at the loss as they left for school.

I was heading back to the ladder, dejected, when I passed James. He was stopped, shaking his head back and forth slowly, gazing at the ground. James then murmured two words, white folks. I knew exactly what he meant.

I still hope that woman was telling me the truth.
