The horned lark was there this afternoon too at about 5ish. It was in the middle of the field to the north of its home flags. I watched it flare its wings at a barn swallow that flew overhead and then saw it chase away the the 3 shorebirds I was watching. It then oddly flew very high into the air calling loudly and I thought it might be getting ready to leave. There was a blusterywind and it really had to fight to stay up so high eventually it dove down in a steep dive and ended up about 20 feet behind where it started out.and settled down as though nothing at all had just happened.hmm.
Also saw a Harrier determined to catch a shorebird in the lark field as I drove in from the Annex. At Lucky Hammock there was a large crew of machete and spray bottle wielding men and a lot less overgrown grass which was really nice to see.
I didn't see the whitetailed kite that Julie had seen this morning nor did I see her flock of 19 swallowtail kites hunting in the area. I did finally spot 4 Swallowtail kites heading south from the vicinity of the Coe visitor center.
