Birds are moving through Bill Baggs Cape Florida SP today, perhaps influenced by continuing west winds. Notable sightings:
Swallow-tailed Kite (kettle of 15 yesterday and 1 today)
White-crowned Pigeon
Chimney Swift (3)
Traill's Flycatcher (early)
Willow Flycatcher (This was another Traill's at opposite end of park that called twice with soft "whit" as I got within 30 feet.)
Great Crested Flycatcher (2)
Eastern Kingbird
Purple Martin
Cliff Swallow (~55)
Barn Swallow (~130, but ~600 yesterday)
Northern Parula
Prairie Warbler (5)
American Redstart (2)
Louisiana Waterthrush
Orchard Oriole (1 today, 2 yesterday)
An interesting sighting was a smallish woodpecker with barred back, definite face pattern and "dirty" looking. Most likely candidate is young Yellow-bellied Sapsucker but I didn't notice white in the wings when it flew.
Crandon Beach has not yet produced interesting shorebirds or terns. However, there are 45 Lesser Black-backed and 8 Great Black-backed Gulls, a few Herring Gulls and Black Skimmers.
On Virginia Key, a flurry of expected migrant warblers are around and 2 Sacred Ibis (from Crandon Marina?) consistently visit the new mud flats.
