The Red-tailed Hawk is carnivorous, and an opportunistic feeder. Its diet is mainly small mammals, but it also includes birds and reptiles. Prey varies with regional and seasonal availability, but usually centers on small rodents. Red-tailed Hawk weight ranges from 1.5 to 3.3 pounds, averaging 2.4 pounds. The RTHA will usually concentrate on prey about half it's weight or less but occasionally it will try for something bigger. Their prey can range in size from beetles to White-tailed Jackrabbits, which are double the weight of most Red-tails.

The Gray Fox ranges from 7.9 to 15 lbs so it seems a little to heavy for a RTHA but you never know what can happen when prey availability becomes a factor.

We have not seen any Fox on campus in a while but they are always cool to see!
