This afternoon I did a tour of Cutler Wetlands before meeting up with Larry Manfredi at the 217th Ave. fields. He and Vicki Rothman had found a Baird's Sandpiper on the north side of 9336 west of 217th Ave., but after extensive efforts we couldn't relocate it. There were plenty of Pectoral Sandpipers and Black-bellied Plovers in those fields. We also found 4 Upland Sandpipers on the south side of 9336. Cutler Wetlands had a nice variety, with 15 shorebird species that I could find. There was also a Gull-billed Tern, several Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and a Least Bittern gave me good looks in the open. Below is the list for afternoon:

Cutler Wetlands:
Black-bellied Plover (1)
Semipalmated Plover (several)
Killdeer (few)
American Avocet (2)
Black-necked Stilt (few)
Greater Yellowlegs (1/2 dozen)
Lesser Yellowlegs (2 dozen)
Solitary Sandpiper (1)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (couple dozen)
Western Sandpiper (3)
Least Sandpiper (couple dozen)
Pectoral Sandpiper
Short-billed Dowitcher (1/2 dozen)
Long-billed Dowitcher (1 confirmed, a few probable)
Stilt Sandpiper (few)

217 Ave. fields:

Black-bellied Plover (~100)
Killdeer ((100+)
Black-necked Stilt (1/2 dozen)
Spotted Sandpiper (1, new for the afternoon)
Least Sandpiper (couple dozen)
Pectoral Sandpiper (~100+)
Upland Sandpiper (4, new for the afternoon)

The Baird's would have been a great bird, but I still had 17 shorebird species for the afternoon, so it's OK. What better way to pass the summertime heat than by standing in the middle of a sun-baked dirt field squinting through a spotting scope?

Cheers!
