I buy 40# bags of wild bird seed with corn and that seems to satisfy all of the birds and even squirrels. I also keep a separate feeder with peanuts in-the-shell for blue jays and squirrels.
In classes that I teach on hummingbird gardening I recommend against using artificial feeders unless there has been a severe freeze that eliminated the flowers on plants. Sugar water in hummingbird feeders can be detrimental to their health, especially the red dye that is often used. The sugar water needs to mixed at the proper ratio (4:1) and boiled to avoid bacteria. It seems like a lot of work when the multitude of plants one can use are more natural, and satisfying.
