I use suet all year around, the woodpeckers thank me for it.I have seen the mockingbirds and even cardinals for it as well. I never have a problem with seeds being left in the feeders thanks to the too many doves that I have.
Don't forget about humming bird feeders,too. I start putting them out about mid to late September.
