I glad to hear that some people still look up and around while walking down the street. We are amazed with how many people we see walking their dogs or just taking a walk that are oblivious to the outside. A beautiful bird will fly right over there head and won't even notice it. While they have plenty of interest in why you are looking through a pair of binos. Go Figure!
Well anyways be happy to see your neighborhood Copper's while you are out. Declines of the Cooper's Hawk in the late 1940s and 1950s were blamed on DDT and pesticide contamination. As if that is not enough at one time, Cooper's Hawks were heavily hunted in persecution for preying on poultry and were called "chicken hawks". Populations started increasing in the late 1960s, but it is still listed as threatened or of special concern in a number of states. They appear to be adapting to breeding in urban areas, which may help increase populations.
So when you see that neighborhood Copper's look up and smile, 50-60 years ago they were almost gone!
