It sounds to me from your description that it is a learned behavior :)
Makes me wonder... if a young Snail Kite is not taught to catch snails, will it eat and survive on just about anything?
How about a Panda? Could it live just as well without bamboo if it was not shown what to eat??
And some birders? Could they thrive without exotic designer beers??
Boggles the mind, it does ;)
