Gary and I went out to Chekika this morning hoping to see the White-tailed Kites. None were seen - but it was later in the morning too. But we did see Common Nighthawks perched along branches in a number of places - at least 5 with another seen flying by. What a treat to get such close up views of them! They were along 168th St. and then along 232 Ave. Also seen was a Downy Woodpecker, Common Ground Dove, a Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-bellied Woodpecker and of course plenty of Meadowlarks (always beautiful to see), Loggerhead Shrikes, Red-winged Blackbirds, Mockingbirds, and Cave Swallows.
On our way home later we stopped by Tamiami Airport to check on the Burrowing Owls and we were not disappointed. In an area towards the rear of the airport we found a Burrowing Owl perched on top of a cone. The first time we've been able to see the entire body and legs so clearly! Awesome! Then here comes another owl flying in being chased by a Loggerhead Shrike. The owl landed in the grass by the cones looking around as if to say "Where did he go?" Didn't see our "target" bird at Chekika but still a nice time out birding.
