I happened upon Tom's photo of the Myakka rail and concur with Bill's ID that it is a Clapper Rail. This ID is based on the lack of reddish on the underparts and edges to the scapulars and back feathers. Both King and Virginia would show reddish (rufous) in their adult plumages. Based on records, Clapper occurs rarely inland in Florida, especially in the fall, and occasionally in winter. It maybe more regular inland during these seasons than records indicate because of the similarity of plumages among the larger rails that makes them sometimes difficult to distinguish in the field.
