I certainly am not a biologist, but the "synching" you refer to happens a lot in nature. The mechanisms are not well known as far as I can tell. Yes, "odeing" is the new bird watching. For our area, I recommend both books by Sidney Dunkle i.e. "Damselflies of Florida, Bermuda and the Bahamas" and "Dragonflies of the Florida Peninsula, Bermuda and the Bahamas" -- both OOP and hard to find. Also, Giff Beaton's "Dragonflies & Damselflies of Georgia and the Southeast."
