There are lots of field marks that the top birders will undoubtedly send, but there is a simple rule especially good for folks new to the dowitcher id quandary, passed on to me by my best birding buddy: "the Long-billed looks like it swallowed a grapefruit." The breast and belly have a stocky, round look. The Short-billed is narrower and much less round.
