Great turn out.
Just a few thoughts-
1.A badge, or sticker, or the wearing of binoculars could of identified us as a group of park users. I think we were probably one-third of the group. (Also for future reference if this goes further)
2. If these cat people are trapping the cats and taking them to a vet, why are they allowed to bring them back. Could they be forced to take them to ASCPA or "pound".
3. Good Meeting, but the work for us really starts NOW. As a Park Manager/Naturalist who has sat on many park planning groups, that meeting was just window dressing. It is required by law and contract. Now we really need to get to work by contacting EVERY County Commissioners, Parks Director and Assistant Director (Howard Gregg-who was there last night-good and smart guy by the way). SQUEAKY WHEEL GETS THE GREASE!!!!! Our thoughts-uniqueness of hammock, critical habitat, regional/state/national use, importance for Neo-tropical migrants AND a management of domestic (I like this to denote that they need to be in a home and not someones mistake) ferral cats with the scientific research and background needs to be in the letter/e-mails.
4. The contractor can make reccomendations, but it will be determined by the parks department and the squeaky wheel which willl drive the project. The research and state law may help to back up our position in the plan to give them the backbone them need to come up with the management plan for ferral cats. If we don't push this, they will continue to do what is politically correct.
5. I am too busy until school is out to come up with the letter, but I wrote alot of thoughts before the meeting. I will address it as regional individual. Possibly Tropical Audubon board might consider a formal resolution or position?
