I posed the very same question last week after I also couldn't find the purple swamphens at the Pembroke Pines llbrary where they have always been so reliable in the past. Word is that there is a statewide effort going on to extirpate them from Florida as they are considered a "nuisance." It would be a shame if they were gone, but nobody seems to know for sure.

As for crested caracaras, a good spot is on the road from the Yeehaw Junction exit off Florida's turnpike heading for Kissimmee Prairie State Park, or in fact anywhere in that general area. They can be perched on a wire or, like vultures, they are often seen picking at carrion by the side of the road.
