This morning I visited Long Key Natural Area (formerly known as Flamingo ESL) in Davie, Broward County. A screaming Cooper's Hawk led me to the resident Great Horned Owl. Today the owl was perched in a tree on the left side of the paved trail that leads into the hammock. This trail begins at a footbridge behind the new nature center. The best birding was along the equestrian trail that runs along the back side of the hammock (this trail is bordered by a brown fence). Birds tallied along this trail (watch where you step!) included Swallow-tailed Kite (carrying nest material), Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, Blue-headed Vireo, Tree Swallow, Blue Jay, Carolina Wren (is this species as unusual in suburban Broward County as it is in suburban Miami Dade?), Hermit Thrush, Northern Mockingbird, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, Prairie and Palm Warblers, Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, Northern Cardinal and Painted Bunting. Great Egrets are nesting on a tree island in the pond between the entrance road and the nature center. Other birds seen in this area included Anhinga, Great Blue, Little Blue, Tricolored and Green Heron, Snowy Egret, White Ibis, Common Moorhen, Belted Kingfisher, Fish Crow and Boat-tailed Grackle.
Now that this property is once again open to the public, look for TAS bird walks to resume here, but probably not until early 2009.
