On March 29, I will be leading a carpool trip to the Lake Kissimmee area. See the TAS events calender for details. Red-cockaded Woodpecker will be one of our target birds. Though dawn or dusk are often the best times to see RCWs, we've had them on previous trips even in the middle of the afternoon. I've found that they tend to forage closer to their nest cavities during the breeding season. We'll be checking areas in Three Lakes WMA that have numerous RCW nest cavities. On a Three Lakes trip couple of years ago, I had my scope focused on a singing Bachman's Sparrow, when a Red-cockaded Woodpecker flew onto a tree in the same field of view!
