TAS TRIP REPORT BROWARD 2-23-2008

Trip leader-John Hutchison
14 individuals
56 species seen

Highlights: At the entrance to Markham Park we were treated to a mixed warbler flock ( Black throated green, Prairie, Palm, Pine (3) Parula (3), Yellow rumps and a Blue headed vireo). We had 8 warbler species on the day. As we viewed the flock, Russ Titus spotted a flock of 20 robins flying overhead. We then walked to the dike spotting a Sharp-shinned Hawk along the way, as well as more robins. As we arrived at the dike Paul Bithorn (life is good) had already heard a King Rail. After an hour and a half on the dike we totaled: Snail kite (3) at a great distance, Harriers (4), Peregrine (1) Purple Gallinule (1) Yellowthroat (5), Blue-winged Teal (25), Pied-billed Grebe (2), Purple Swamp Hens (20) and the normal waders.

The group elected to go to Hollywood to try for the Bananaquit, after 1 and one half hours, some of the group left (bad sign for them). Shortly afterward Russ Titus heard and spotted the Bananaquit two blocks away. We all got good looks there and followed the bird back to its favorite Bottlebrush tree and got killer views. A lifer for many!!!!.
