I've had very good luck with the thistle feeders as long as I have fresh seed. They are all over them - not as manythis year though. Buying from a feed store or Internet/catalog I've had great luck but when I've purchased thistle seed from the local Target/Walmart type store it doesn't attract as many goldfinches.
All I can guess is they keep it on the shelf too long and are not sensitive to it's deterioration.
