John: I'd take the Fla. Turnpike south until it ends in Florida City and head straight for Everglades National Park. Go to Anhinga Trail at Royal Palm for some of the best bird photography opportunities you'll ever get. Don't miss the baby Anhingas in several nests there. The alligators are also doing their territorial roaring at Anhinga Trail now (see my post of Feb. 3), something you'll never forget. Other photo ops include the nesting Great Horned Owl with chick in the Coe Visitors' Center parking lot, plus nesting Ospreys with young and American Crocodiles at Flamingo (both by the marina).
