The limpkin show at Green Cay was spectacular this morning. The first setting was at 8:00- 9:05. The parents came out with four little ones. (The fifth probably is dead. After the hour long show with parents closely guarding the chicks they wandered into the cabbage palm hammock and disappeared. Many specatators left at 9:15. Within 25 minutes the limpkin family emerged and strolled down the shore line all the way to the visitor center where they remained in clear view at a distance of thirty feet for twenty minutes. More and more spectators appeared but it didn't faze the parents. Than the limpkins reversed course and headed back westerly into the alligator flag/bull rush area. A red-shouldered hawk came in but mom clucked and the chicks went into the saw palmettos. Ten minutes later, the hawk left and the chicks came out and followed mom. Than in a remarkably bold adventure she walked them across a downed cabbage palm where they gathered and posed for 30 miniutes. The boardwalk practically sagged into the water from the weight of the viewers clustered. Powere jogging came to a dead stop as the tangle of tripod legs made in almost impossible to walk the boardwalk let alone power walk it.
Mom preened the chicks balanced on the tree trunk turning left, right, all around....it had all the appearance of a French fashion show. It was quite a show. And on behalf of the all the dedicated photographers there this morning we share it with you.
Enjoy. Limpkins on parade!
