The build of the nest, one very large horizontal broken branch and the general foliage of the mahogany make this an interesting photo op. I have found late afternoon between 3-5 more conducive but that is based on the baby owl still quite small. Now, as it grows that adds another component to the mix as it will begin to move from the nest center. The picture below is 500 mm only on digital (which equals 500+250). To put a 2x on a film camera with 500 = 1000mm. More than adequate. To put a 2x on a 500 with a digital gives 1000+500 = 1500 mm. Pretty powerful for only 50 feet.

The afternoon sun produces better results for me as the warm yellow did well with the gray of the owls and green of the tree. Also, the tree was dropping seed pods once in a while. Get hit with one of those grenades and you'll remember the day.

No matter what; it is a great viewing opportunity and pretty bold of this bird...but than it is a National Park. Some lucky person is going to get the "first flight" picture.
