: Hill Mynas nested in a dead palm tree on the Doc Thomas (TAS) property this year. They put on
a show for some of the visitors to the TAS Plant Sale last weekend. There were at least two fledglings. There were several(as usual) around the entrance to Fairchild Tropical Gardens last Saturday morning. They have been nesting in this area icluding the UM campus for over 30 years.
Pileated Woodpeckers are regular, but not common, nesters all along the coast in what is left of the old Brickell Hammock. They nest in the Matheson Hammock area and at the Charles Deering Estate. Before Hurricane Andrew we used to find them at Cape Florida State Park. They will nest in Casurina(Australian Pine Trees),
dead Royal Palms, etc. We used to see them feeding on the ground in the oak grove picnic
area in Matheson Hammock Park just north of the new entrance to FTG. Marjory Stoneman Douglas once told me about them nesting near her home on Stewart Avenue in Coconut Grove.

P.S. There was a calling red-shouldered hawk at FTG on Saturday. They have nested there in the past. Red-tailed hawks winter in that area along with short-tailed hawks(I saw a dark-phase near the new visitor center at FTG last Saturday morning. It seemed to be checking out all of the orchid show visitors as it circled about 50 feet
above them).
