After a morning fishing with a friend at Chokoloskee, I decided to detour 7 miles west from the intersection of 41 and 29 to see if the eagles at the Fakahatchee boardwalk were nesting, and if so, whether a photo op might present itself.I arrived there at about 3pm and found woodpeckers galore(downies and red bellied seen; pileated heard), a flock of robins, multiple red shouldered hawks(including one perched on a tree at eye level along the path, which permitted approaches as close as 6 feet), a few wood storks at the observation platform at the end of the boardwalk, lots and lots of small warblers I couldn't identify because they were so high in the canopy and because my identification skills stink anyway, and of course the eagles-who remained invisible for most of the visitors while I was there, but rewarded the patient by calling to one another and then flying from the nest -unfortunately to a tree further out of useful camera(*well my camera anyway) range. The highlight of the afternoon however was the peevish 18 inch alligator's effort to bully the wading woodstork, as seemn in this picture(better if you go to the flickr site and enlarge it).The woodstork gave the gator a friendly poke on the tail and the gator swam off. If you view the sequence in the link posted here,(click on the link then click the fakahatchee set) look carefully at the image starting with the number 4, and you can see why the woodstork was undaunted by junior...anyway, thought I'd share this image of the gator/woodstork encounter
