D--First of all, the woodpeckers were EVERYWHERE there-all along the boardwalk and at the observation platform. Note: the water is as low as I've ever seen it-and there were few wading birds yesterday.
Many of the woodpeckers were within 20-30 feet of the boardwalk, many more much further away-you could see and hear them calling and hammering the length of the boardwalk.

it's the first photo there"downy woodpecker"--not in the Fakahatchee set. It is totally uncropped.Enlarge it fully and you'll get the idea of how close that bird was through a 400 mm lens. I calculate the lens to be the equivalent of about a 5x binocular--so with a pair of 8x or 10x you should have lots of good views of the woodpeckers, assuming they're still active there.
