: Hello, everybody I decided from last post that I was going to make my own nest box. I made it with the dimensions for a red-bellied woodpecker. I put it on a ficus tree about an acre away from a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers how have already started building on their cavity. I think I put the nest box too late for a woodpecker to nest on it. Does anyone know if a pair of any bird might still go visit the nest box. I'm really excited about it. Oh, today I saw an immature red-shouldered hawk that also looked like a prairie falcon. I don't know what it was. I have seen two pairs of blue jays building their nest. A pair of cardinals are starting to feed their chicks. Well I hope a pair of any bird at least go to my nest box. Please someone reply.
I think that the woodpeckers are now looking for nesting spots. They nest in April I think, unfortually they are push out of their nesting areas by the more and non-native species the evil European starlings. They will kill the babies if left unguarded and destroy the eggs. Woodpeckers will use boxes and really like if there is some sawdust in the bottom of the box. Good luck let everyone know what happens. I have 3 boxes, one the squirrels have taken it over, the other a pair of woodpeckers have been checkin it out the other STARLINGS. One of they will be checking out real soon.
