Over the past week I've birded areas all around Florida, including Flamingo as part of the CBC, other parts of the Everglades, Marco Island, and St. Marks NWR. Here are the highlights for some of those areas:
Lake Okeechobee- Clewiston (Dec 28)
-5 or so BRONZED COWBIRDS along the paved trail at the Clewiston parking area
-also CASSIN'S KINGBIRD with westerns at the area described in previous posts
Flamingo Campground (Dec 30)
-2 LESSER NIGHTHAWKS flying over the very back loop at dusk
Anhinga Trail (Dec 31)
-BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK
-King rails- heard them in literally all directions
-Least Bittern- 6 or so, all heard
Marco Island (Dec 31)
-Wilson's, Piping, Snowy, Semipalmated, and Black-bellied Plovers
-Red Knot (5)
-Least and Western Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitchers, Dunlin
St. Marks NWR (Jan 1)
-one American Woodcock, along the entrance road, flying ahead of my car
-Northern Pintail, Canvasback, Greater Scaup, Green-winged Teal
-Horned Grebe (1 on the coast)
-American Avocet and American Oystercatcher
-Long-billed Dowitchers (heard them call)
-83 species total in 2 and a half hours, nice way to start the new year!
Back in northwest Arkansas, where it's 18 degrees right now... have to re-acclimate!
