I expected Purple Swamphens to be seen on the CBC; I even recommended that the CBC circle include STA-5 to monitor the swamphen population (provided that it isn't extirpated by the state).
Needless to say, this is the first Christmas Bird Count in history to include Purple Swamphen. I wonder how long the Clewiston/STA-5 CBC will have a monopoly on swamphens in Florida. My guess would be no more than a few years.
The fun part will be guessing which CBC will be the next to report swamphens. I'm not really exxagerating when I say that virtually any CBC circle in the peninsula south of Gainesville could be next.
