The red spot on the throat is iridescent and while vary in size depending on how much light hits the throat area. Sometimes we will see a RT with the throat area looking more like a dark spot but as soon as the hummer turns it's head it will turn red. The more light that hits the spot the more red it will show. An immature RT Hummingbird will only have a small spot much like your description. Your hummer can also be a rare visitor to S. Florida the Anna's Hummingbird. The female does have a small red spot on the throat area. I am sure if you post the picture many birders will help you with the ID.
