Actually, I believe the beautiful Blue Jay's plumage that you enjoy is not caused by pigmentation in the feathers. There are no blue pigments in Blue Jay feathers. Rather, the coloration one sees is due to tiny transparent structures in the feathers that bounce blue light at the on-looker while screening out other wavelengths of light.
