Actually this is quite normal and you're right, it was probably going to roost for the night. I always see increased activity at my bird bath in the evening, though usually not so busy right after a lot of rain. A couple of years ago I had a Hooded Warbler that wintered in my neighborhood and the only time I ever saw it was when it would come in to bathe just before dark.
