Julie and I went down to Hawk Watch yesterday.
The wind was blowing fiercely and the sightings were relatively sparse. However we were there to see Cole from hawkwatch valiantly rescue a female commonyellow throat from a skylight in the ladies restroom. At least she picked the right one!
It was one of our 2 (two!) warblers of the day.
We then ambled down to Indigenous park in Key West, only to find it locked. Bummer!!! I thought they were closed on weekends-maybe they close on holidays too? A bit bizarre for a park no?
We briefly birded the fence and saw another common yellowthroat and palm warblers.
Feeling a bit frustrated, we went to Fort Zachary Taylor to try our luck there. As I had been there about ten days ago, I knew where the fruiting fig tree was and hoped to find some birds.Any birds.
We did occasionally hear a few indignant CHIPS, but the air was quite busy with acrobatic raptors intent on hunting.
Merlins, Peregrine,Redshoulder and this guy (is it a sharp shinned? Coopers?)and a Northern Harrier hunting the chain link fence by the water.
While watching these guys, Julie took a moment to bin the clouds and found a group of more than thirty raptors circling way above us.
Hanging up our bins for the day, we wandered back to Indigenous park only to find it still locked.
So we headed up to Grassy Key and had totally awesome fish sandwiches.Did I mention they were awesome?
Ps sorry about the res on this pic-I brought it up quite a bit trying to get a better look at the streaks and legs on the bird.
