Getting or giving advice on camera gear can be difficult. It's like asking what computer or large screen TV should I buy. I think you are right on with a SLR. I use a Canon Digital Rebel XTi and an EF 100-400 telephoto with image stabilization. The camera is less than $1K, but the lens is almost $1.5K. If I could afford it, I'd probably buy a Canon MKIII (Somewhere around 6K) and a 500mm telephoto lens (somewhere around 8K). Add a few more hundred for a 1.4x extender. There is something to be said about getting what you pay for. I just purchased a 430EX flash for about half the price of a 580EX. I'd rather have the 580 (more power). The bottom line is that you may have to compromise. Most people on the birding websites use Canons or Nikons. Check out some birding picture on the web sites. A lot of photographers include what equipment and settings they use with the pictures. There are many sites to go to. One of my favorite for bird and nature photography is www.naturescapes.net I stared a little portfolio on there myself. Search on Wil Domke if you would like to see a couple of the pictures that I took with the equipment mentioned above. Oh yeah, did I mention that you should have a computer and some good software to really polish those pictures. I use Photoshop Elements 5.0.

I know I answered to one individual, but others may be interested - sorry.
