Today we were taking care of some errands and were close to the site and decided to stop we arrived at about 6:30 and the gates were closed but we were able to park on the side and observe the birds come in to their roost that is next to the fence on your left. There were at least 75-100 birds getting ready for the night. It was nice to see the Tri-Colored Herons fly into the roost, the Anhinga would not let any other birds land near them. The Herons just sat on the tree limbs with a majestic stance, the sun was setting so the colors on these white birds was amazing. Off in the distance Mariel spots a Pileated Woodpecker and calls for me to view the bird as it flew over her. Me in the meanwhile could not hear her calling for me because the birds calling and settling in with a loud sound that drowned out all traffic and human sounds. The birds kept on flying in as we left the site and there is no way of knowing how many roost there every night. It was a cool sighting to see all these different birds congregating together.

We saw the following today 9/11/07

White Ibis 50+(immature birds mixed in the bunch)
Anhinga 7
Cormorant 5
Tri-colored Heron 15
Great Egret 12
Green Heron 4
Mottled Duck 2
Pileated Woodpecker 1
Northern Cardinal 3 (2 males 1 female)
Loggerhead Shrike 3
Osprey 1
Northern Mockingbird 4
Blue Jay 5

Green Iguana 4 (around the roost)

Nature is Awesome
