Loggerhead shrike behavior question...

I have a flight cage with several finches outside my dining room window. This morning I saw a loggerhead shrike trying for several minutes to get to my finches. I know they eat insects and small lizards, but will they eat birds too? I guess they'll take baby birds, but these finches are adult. Could the shrike have been after something else?
