As for the orientation of the common nighthawks,the wires give off heat as well. Or, it could be the small magnetic field that the wires create , although I don't think nighthawks are particularly sensitive to magnetic fields like pigeons may be.
Very interesting observation, though. Could it be something more basic, like perhaps just the direction of the wind blowing or the sun?
