At the risk of violating some of the rules here, I am posting a few of my better pictures from our recent trip to Ecuador. If the geography of this forum encompasses Jacksonville Tampa and places as difficult to get to as Key West in the winter, then my posting is not too far afield, since Quito is a mere four hours from Miami, all the photographs here were taken within a 2 Hour Drive of Quito.
Those of you who know me know that I do not consider myself a "birder", and I am even less a photographer. My motto about birds is quite simply that if I have not photographed it, I have not seen it. Of course, this can be quite frustrating for an accompanying spouse, whose interest in birds is far from an obsession. Nevertheless, she was a remarkably good sport, as I hunted around the bush in search of the perfect photograph of the on one more miniscule subject than the next, which I invariably missed most of the time anyway. Accordingly, my wife Emily and I spent 10 days in Ecuador starting on May 25 and spent eight of those days in the company of a wonderful bird guide, who was also a repository of knowledge about everything Ecuadorian from the natural history and politics, from the cuisine to the volcanoes.
I am posting the following pictures as a representative sample of the few best of my photographs of some of my favorite birds on this trip. Although I took perhaps a thousand pictures during our hikes and drives through the magnificent Ecuadorian countryside, I would estimate that only 20% are real keepers, and I offer the following few by way of titillation.
I will be happy to post more photos if I receive a positive response, however, I don't want to clutter up valuable space, which might be better utilized in discussions off the putative sightings of, for instance, vermillion flycatchers..
Ultimately, Emily and I plan to return to Ecuador, and perhaps buy land or rent a place, and I would not be averse to organizing a birding tour , now that I am aware of the terrain and the protocols there.
Please send feedback if you want more pictures or if you don't, either by clicking on the link to my e-mail address, by clicking on my name above, or post your comments here.
