The past two nights (early mornings, actually, from about midnight to 4:00 AM), I conducted nightjar surveys in south Miami-Dade as part of the Southeastern U.S. Nightjar Survey, coordinated by the Center for Conservation Biology at William and Mary College. I covered four routes (two each night), in West Kendall, the Redlands, Homestead and the pinelands area in Everglades National Park. Of the 26 Chuck-will's-widows heard during the surveys, 24 were heard in Everglades National Park or at the L-31W Canal, just outside the park entrance. The other two were heard at the C-111 Canal, 1.5 miles east of the park entrance, and along SW 147 Avenue in the Redlands. Of the 29 Common Nighthawks heard, only 4 were in Everglades National Park or at the L-31W Canal. Nighthawks were evenly distributed at survey locations away from ENP; 8 were heard elsewhere along the Homestead route, 8 in the Redlands and 9 in West Kendall. While at Long Pine Key, I stopped at the picnic area, hoping to hear Antillean Nighthawks. I didn't hear any nightjars while I was at that location.
