Gary and I were at Cutler Wetlands this afternoon. We've yet to be there the same time as another birder! No Wigeon either (nor Black-bellied Whistling duck). Oh well. The shorebirds seem less each time, but we did see Dowitchers and a couple Yellowlegs on the west side, plus a small group of sandpipers on the east side(too far to tell which kind, sorry). There were Mottled ducks and a Blue-winged Teal in the SE corner. Other than the multitude of Black-necked Stilt, we also saw many White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, a White Pelican, Tricolored Heron, and at least 4 or more Green Herons.
We checked out the Dump Marsh (very empty and quiet) but we watched a juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk being mobbed until he escaped and perched on a dead tree trunk by the canal.
From here we went to Bill Sadowsky's - also very quiet except for the Cardinals, Bluejays and Mockingbirds. The excitement of the day came in the form of two adult Nutmeg Mannikins which have a nest in one of the smaller trees near the canal(in front of the open field by the park). Sibley's says they are also known as Spice Finch or Spotted Munia. Whatever name they go by, they are beautiful!
For a cloudy, windy and a little bit rainy day, it still was an enjoyable afternoon birding!
