In my yard! This is totally unexpected. I was outside draining excess water from the pool when I hear a tapping on my dried-up dree next to the pool pump. I look and to my surprise it's a Hairy Woodpecker. Way too cool. Luckily it's the weekend, so I plan to keep an eye out to see if it returns. If it does, I'll be sure to post and folks are welcome to come by.

In other news, Cutler Wetlands had fewer birds this afternoon, in part due to higher water levels and perhaps the fact that many birds just continued on their trip. There was some nice variety:

Red Knot (in the SE quadrant)
Short-billed Dowitcher (1)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (~40)
Semipalmated Plover (10)
White-rumped Sandpiper (3)
Lesser Yellowlegs (1)
Greater Yellowlegs (1)
Stilt Sandpiper (2)
Black-necked Stilt
Killdeer
Least Bittern
Little Blue Heron

Semi, short, lesser, least, little.. What's with all these diminutive guys. There was a time when we had Greater Black-backed Gull, Great Blue Heron, Long-billed Dowitcher... I'm not making sense, but I'm still getting over the euphoria of the Hairy Woodpecker.
