Red Bellied Egg ?'s

My biggest nest box fear was realized this morning. The Starlings have driven the nesting Red Bellied Woodpeckers OUT! And they had one egg! This despite my efforts the last several weeks to keep those d#*n nuisance Starlings away.

My questions...How long will the egg remain viable? Would it be at all possible to keep the egg in a homemade incubator to give it a chance of hatching? Or, considering the first two questions, would it not be a good idea to raise the Red Bellied in captivity? In other words, could it adapt to life in the wild?

All replies are appreciated.

Doug
