I can't comment on what you saw Dec. 10, but the place and time are right for Black Scoters. A couple of years ago in early December, I saw a group of 24 Blacks floating in the surf off Hutchinson Island (Jensen Beach). Conventional wisdom is that they never make it south of Jacksonville, but that just isn't so.

: I was surfing at Ft. Pierce Inlet Tues. Dec. 10, and noticed a lot of seabird activity offshore. Could your scaup have been scoters? Of course, I can't take bins out in the water, but I saw a small flock of something scoter-like fly by much further out, dark, low and fast with shallow wingbeats.
