The following is from Jerry Lorenz:

It is with a heavy heart that I report that Alexander Sandy Sprunt IV succumbed to pneumonia this past Friday, March 2, 2007 after suffering many years of a debilitating illness.

Sandy was the Science Director for NAS from 1960 to 1995, however, being the son of Alexander Sprunt Jr., Sandy literally spent his entire lifetime working for Audubon. Sandy spent his early years building the boardwalk at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and founded the Tavernier Science Center in 1960 after taking over as Science Director from his friend and colleague Robert Porter Allen. He performed research all over the world but is best known for his work on Flamingos in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. At Sandy s request, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in his name.

Some of my most vivid memories of Sandy were walking the Corkscrew boardwalk with him after his retirement as he told stories of building what has become an Audubon jewel. It is a fitting tribute to him.

Sandy is survived by his wife Donna, daughters Betsy and Susan and six grandchildren. Please send respects to the family, care of the Tavernier Science Center, 115 Indian Mound Trail, Tavernier FL, 33070.

Jerry Lorenz
Director of Research
Tavernier Science Center
